Where to Buy Solana Meme Coins: A Beginner’s Guide

The Short Answer

Most Solana meme coins are bought on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), not on big exchange apps. You need three things: a Solana wallet, some SOL to trade with and pay network fees, and the token's official contract address. Then you swap SOL for the token on a DEX or aggregator such as Jupiter or Raydium, or through the swap built into your wallet.

Your Options, From Most to Least Familiar

Centralized exchanges

Apps like Coinbase or Kraken list a small number of the largest Solana meme coins. If the coin you want is listed there, buying works like any other app purchase. Most smaller meme coins are not listed, so you will usually need the next options.

Your wallet's built-in swap

Wallets such as Phantom have a swap screen that routes your trade through decentralized exchanges for you. It is the simplest on chain option for beginners. Wallets may add their own fee, so compare the quote. See Phantom's guide to swapping tokens.

DEX aggregators and DEXs

Jupiter is an aggregator. It checks many pools and picks a route for your swap. Raydium is an exchange that runs its own pools. You connect your wallet to the site and approve the swap in your wallet.

Launchpads

Brand new tokens often start on launchpads such as pump.fun, where the price follows a preset curve until the token "graduates" into a normal trading pool. This is the riskiest place to buy. Most tokens launched this way never graduate, and many lose nearly all their value.

Step by Step: Your First Swap

  • Install a wallet from its official site or app store. Phantom, Solflare and Backpack are popular Solana wallets. Write your secret recovery phrase on paper and never share it with anyone.
  • Get SOL. Buy SOL on an exchange you trust and withdraw it to your wallet address, or buy SOL inside the wallet if it offers that. Send a small test amount first.
  • Keep some SOL for fees. Solana network fees are usually tiny, but you need a little SOL in the wallet for every transaction, including selling later. See how Solana fees work.
  • Get the official contract address. Take it from the project's website or verified profile. Paste the address into the swap screen instead of typing the coin's name.
  • Check the quote. Look at the price impact and slippage before you approve. If price impact is high, the pool is thin and you are moving the price against yourself. Our guide on liquidity and selling explains why.
  • Read what your wallet shows, then approve. A normal swap shows SOL going out and the token coming in. If the preview shows anything else, or a warning, stop.
  • Example: Buying $DERPYDAVE

Our DERP SWAP page has a MemeWarzone swap built in and lists the official contract address: 2wT8AcQFEzXMEjb6qbs1GDg3mJ3DKBw6eBWp7GqsBAGS. $DERPYDAVE trades on Solana decentralized exchanges and apps such as Jupiter, Raydium, Lute and Bags. It is not listed on centralized exchanges. Whichever route you use, paste that exact address. This is an example of the process, not a recommendation to buy.

    Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Searching by name. Copycat tokens use the same name and logo. Always paste the contract address.
  • Clicking links from ads, replies or DMs. Fake swap sites copy real ones to steal wallet approvals. Type the address of the site yourself or use a bookmark.
  • Spending all your SOL. Leave enough for fees so you can sell or move tokens later.
  • Skipping the scam check. Run the steps in how to check whether a Solana meme coin is a scam first.
